The Feed the Future Myanmar Agriculture Policy Support Activity (MAPSA) is hosting a series of capacity strengthening modules designed to train Myanmar economists and policy analysts on current knowledge, evidence, and methods for the analysis of the Myanmar agri-food system. Through these modules, participants will learn new analytical and relevant economic methods using updated datasets for Myanmar and will benefit from expert insights on the functioning of the rural and agricultural economy. After this course, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of supply, demand, and markets of agricultural produce, nutritional issues, the non-farm economy, and investments required to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth in Myanmar.
About the Module
In the decade prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Myanmar was in the midst of a dietary transition driven by rapid economic growth and urbanization. However, the impacts of COVID-19 and political shocks led to a reversal in economic growth and poverty reduction gains, as well as sharp increases in food prices, and has had profound implications for dietary quality and hence malnutrition. Addressing malnutrition comprehensively, including undernutrition and overweight/obesity, will require an inclusive, multi-sectoral and nutrition-sensitive development strategy. This module explored the characteristics of Myanmar’s food consumption patterns through a nutrition lens, focusing on a new measure of multidimensional dietary deprivation and a novel extension of that index to nutrient deprivation.
