The Feed the Future Myanmar Agriculture Policy Support Activity (MAPSA) is hosting a series of capacity strengthening modules designed to train Myanmar economists and policy analysts on current knowledge, evidence, and methods for the analysis of the Myanmar agri-food system. Through these modules, participants will learn new analytical and relevant economic methods using updated datasets for Myanmar and will benefit from expert insights on the functioning of the rural and agricultural economy. Through this series, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the supply, demand, and markets for agricultural products, nutritional issues, the non-farm economy, and investments required to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth in Myanmar.
About the Module
Myanmar’s rice economy has been battered by severe shocks in recent years, including increased insecurity in rural areas, higher world rice prices and sharp declines in cross-border exports. Rice production has stagnated in recent years, as well. This module will explore the implications of these shocks on Myanmar’s rice exports, domestic rice production and domestic prices of rice. Participants will learn about the partial equilibrium model of Myanmar’s rice sector and how the model can be used to simulate shocks and make inferences. Moreover, participants will learn how Myanmar’s rice economy has responded to shocks in household income, increasing world rice prices, cessation of rice export, and reduction of productivity among others.
