The Feed the Future Myanmar Agriculture Policy Support Activity (MAPSA) learning series is designed to train Myanmar economists and policy analysts on current knowledge, evidence, and methods for the analysis of the Myanmar agri-food system. Through this learning series, participants will learn new analytical and relevant economic methods using updated datasets for Myanmar and will benefit from expert insights on the agrifood system, food security and nutrition. Participants will receive a comprehensive understanding on key topical issues that are important to development of an inclusive and sustainable agrifood system in Myanmar.
About the Module
The COVID-19 pandemic and political crisis in Myanmar have led to a large deterioration in real income as well as sharp increases in food prices which have had profound implications for dietary quality and hence malnutrition. Recent IFPRI surveys found low consumption of nutrient-dense foods and frequent consumption of unhealthy foods dense in calories, fats, sugar, and salt. Myanmar therefore has a double burden malnutrition problem with undernutrition (mostly in children) coexisting with overweight/obesity in adults. Both forms of malnutrition are major public health concerns, as childhood malnutrition affects health, education outcomes and cognitive development, while obesity is a major risk factor for a wide range of non-communicable diseases (heart disease and diabetes in particular) that reduce life expectancy, increase morbidity, and reduce quality of life. This webinar will therefore focus on measuring and analyzing indicators for effectively tracking the prevalence of poor dietary practices and assessing anthropometric measures in adults and children.
